Following the success of its first Lunch & Learn, the ESCP Energy Society board members organised a second event exploring Turkish culture and the country’s energy landscape through one of its most powerful social rituals: the traditional Turkish breakfast.
Held on 30 January at Mehmet Efendi 1953 and brilliantly led by MSc in Energy Management students Ali Ates, Ece Karadağlı and Zeynep Mataraci, the event provided a full cultural immersion, allowing participants to discover new flavours while gaining deeper insights into Turkish history and the country’s energy transition.
The session combined cultural storytelling with interactive learning. A quiz on Turkish history, heritage, and modern insights added a playful, competitive twist, keeping engagement high. Attendees were invited to deepen their understanding of Turkey through three complementary perspectives:
- History & Heritage: An exploration of key historical origins, iconic monuments, and the country’s cultural evolution over time.
- Cultural & Daily Life Insights: An introduction to the social importance of tea rituals, the richness of Turkish cuisine, and traditions such as Turkish coffee and tasseography.
- Turkish Renewable Energy Landscape: An overview of its National Energy Plan, 2035 solar ambitions, and the strategic role of geothermal energy and hydropower as a major source in the national electricity mix.
“I was surprised to learn that hydropower remains Turkey’s leading renewable energy source in terms of installed capacity, despite its Mediterranean location and strong solar potential. Beyond the insights, the event also provided a great opportunity to strengthen connections within the MEM cohort,” said Ilyse Igondo Vandji, MSc in Energy Management student.
Big thanks to Ali, Ece, and Zeynep for their dedication, energy, and generosity in sharing their culture and expertise, and to all participants for contributing to such an enriching moment of intercultural exchange.
